Why use a free keyword tool for Amazon?
First reason: you run on a tight budget. Second reason, because the right keywords can be the golden ticket to staggering sales, but you don't have the money to hire someone to do it, so you diy.
Wanna take an expert advice? If you don't have the money, the BEST free Amazon keyword tool is Amazon itself. As you may know, Amazon uses it's own algorithm called A9. And it's search bar has an autocomplete function. I have put up a free spreadsheet to use it. Simply change the main keyword and you'll get suggestions from A9 itself and for every autocomplete + letter on the abecedary.
You'll see that the keywords are limited to 10 results and they will change from day to day. That's because A9 will show you the main keywords (and most searched) for the day. So, let's say you're looking for iphone cases on your keyword research:
Tadaaaa! However, there are more free tools. Not as good as mine, of course, hehehe.

Ahrefs Amazon Keyword Tool
Just like Sistrix, Ahrefs is renowned for its robust SEO tools, and its Amazon Keyword Tool is no exception. It offers detailed keyword research data, including search volume, competition level and keyword suggestions.
But, why is it free if Ahrefs is a paid tool? You're right, because it's not a great tool. YOu only get 100 results and the search volume is mostly coming from estimations.

- 100 keywords for free
Cons
- Not reliable search volume and competition data

Sonar Amazon Keyword Tool
And last but not least, here comes Sonar Tool, our oldest best friend when it comes to Amazon keyword research for free. This used to be the only tool for keyword research with no cost back in the day. And it used to be offered by Sellics so it's now been acquired by Perpetua.io.
This is a specific tool for Amazon keyword research, offering a large database of keywords used by shoppers. It’s particularly helpful for identifying the exact phrases customers use, thus enabling more targeted and effective keyword optimization.
I'm sad to inform you that, and I quote: “Please note that Sonar Amazon Keyword Research Tool is a legacy feature of the Sellics platform and will be discontinued in the next few months. While we're working to provide the best possible experience, you may encounter older data and occasional performance issues.”
As usual, don't expect search volume by numbers. You'll just get some lines: 5 lines = lots of searches/month. 1 line = just a few searches per month.
Pros
- Extensive keyword database
- Focus on shopper-specific phrases
Cons
- Will be discontinued in a few months
Conclusions
After analyzing these free Amazon keyword research tools, it's clear that each has its strengths and weaknesses (more weaknesses than strenghts, if you ask me). Let's break down the conclusions:
Best Overall Free Tool: KeywordTool.io
- Strengths: extensive keyword generation and insightful search frequency data. It's a great starting point for those new to Amazon selling, providing a broad range of keywords.
- Weaknesses: The tool shows limited results unless you upgrade to the PRO version, and it lacks specific data for niche markets.
Most User-Friendly: Unicorn Smasher
- Strengths: Unicorn Smasher is ideal for sellers with zero budget for keyword research. Its real-time data analysis, user-friendly interface, and market insights make it an excellent choice for beginners.
- Weaknesses: The tool has limited depth in keyword analysis, which might not satisfy advanced users. But, hey, it's free
Best for Long-Tail Keywords: Keyword Tool Dominator
- Strengths: specializes in long-tail keywords and offers predictive keyword suggestions. It's the only free tool in this list that includes some filters.
- Weaknesses: It has limitations in broader keyword scope and might not be as effective for high-competition keywords.
Most Limited Free Version: Ahrefs Amazon Keyword Tool
- Strengths: offers 100 keywords for free, just for basic research.
- Weaknesses: The tool's free version provides unreliable search volume and competition data, making it less useful for detailed analysis.
The Most Reliable Free Tool: Amazon's Own Search Bar
As a personal note, if you're running on a tight budget, the best free tool is Amazon's own search bar with its autocomplete function. While it provides limited results, it's directly sourced from Amazon's A9 algorithm, ensuring relevance and accuracy.
So, in conclusion, while these free tools have limitations compared to paid options like Jungle Scout or Helium 10, they still offer valuable insights, especially for those just starting out or operating with limited budgets.
The choice of tool largely depends on your specific needs, whether it's broad keyword discovery, long-tail keyword focus, or user-friendly interfaces for beginners. And, hey, expect no miracles coming from this tools.
